Mickey Mouse became a star in Steamboat Willie, which premiered on 18 November 1928. Walt Disney directed it and Ub Iwerks did most of the animation. Mickey came after Disney lost the rights to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit. Two earlier silent shorts, including Plane Crazy, found no distributor. MoMA credits Iwerks as the designer and animator. Steamboat Willie was an early sound cartoon, made after the success of The Jazz Singer.
