Vermeer painted Girl with a Pearl Earring around 1665 as a tronie, a study of a face and costume, not a portrait of a named sitter. The Mauritshuis in The Hague has owned it since 1902. A 2018 study found that the girl originally sat in front of a dark green curtain, not the plain dark background we see now.
Created with 3,611 shapes placed by hand. The blue headscarf was painted with a lot of ultramarine: on your copy it is a small area where shades of blue sit side by side.
