Van Gogh painted Café Terrace at Night in Arles in mid-September 1888, working outdoors after dark. He avoided black and gray and used blue, violet and green instead, set against the warm yellow gaslight under the awning. It hangs in the Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo, and Van Gogh first showed it in 1891 as Coffeehouse, in the evening.
Created with 3,611 shapes placed by hand. Zoom in on the edge of the awning, where the yellow meets the deep blue of the sky.
