The Care Bears began around 1981 as greeting card art for American Greetings and became a toy line in 1982. Grumpy Bear is dark blue, and his belly badge is a rain cloud with hearts among the drops. Elena Kucharik illustrated the original set, and all ten Care Bears, Grumpy among them, launched as toys in 1982. Kenner turned them into plush bears in 1983. Grumpy Bear is the one who grumbles about everything.
Created with 3,166 shapes placed by hand. He is shown with a scowl.
