The Joker first appeared in Batman #1 in 1940, created by Bill Finger, Bob Kane and Jerry Robinson. Finger showed the others a picture of Conrad Veidt as Gwynplaine in the 1928 film The Man Who Laughs, the main visual source. He was meant to die in his first story, and an editor spared him.
Created with 6,400 shapes placed by hand. White paint and a red smile sit on a black background, and Nelson Mandela is the other board with exactly 6,400 shapes.
